Museum Shootout Level
This level is a concept for a futuristic museum in an FPS that has been taken over by terrorists. There is an outdoor sign, as well as a various exhibits one can use as cover. I made this in a few weeks for a class, and I like how the structure turned out.
This was created as sort of the first big assignment in the class, made as a simple demonstration for how to use Unreal 4 and working with enemy placements. I put the player spawn in one corner, the enemy spawn at the other, and set a navigation box so they could move around. Then the walls and various assets were set up and grey-boxing came quickly afterwards.
The level creation also noted a shift in theme, as there weren't any assets involving fossils or historical vehicles. Luckily, the assets that were pre-installed with the pack my professor had given us to create the level had a lot of futuristic stuff, so I shifted gears and created a future museum level highlighting technological advances. It is the reason why a lot of the walls and roofs are force fields and irregular walls, and the reason for the door being closed. That was a model with a metal door texture over it.
The feeling I wanted to convey with this one is urgency and desperation, with weapons and health items strewn about. The environment allows for the use of cover, as signs and exhibits become walls for stopping bullets, and the entrance hall has turned its chairs and ticket booths into makeshift barriers to shoot behind.
One of the biggest challenges was the enemy spawn rate and enemy difficulty. The enemies were supposedly a lot worse than what you see now, and they were still very hard during play-testing, and spawned too fast. I found a way to reduce their spawn rate via the enemy spawner tick
A lot of time was also spent on the outside, containing things like an entrance, a sign with a graphic in warning labels to show an emergency state, and the design evoked a sort of caged feeling. Where you're locked in for survival. I think even with the nerfs my professor put on it, they're still able to catch you off guard, adding to the sense of danger.
